Hey guys ive only been in the hobby for a few months so im not exactly sure how much to feed my tank. I test all my parameters regularly and theres no problem as of now and i do weekly 5 gallon water changes. I have a 20g long with only corals 4 blue leg hermits a scarlet hermit and 2 nass snails and sand sifting sea star. No fish right now my tank has velvet so im waiting a few more weeks until its safe to put fish in. Been 40 days so far. My question is how often should i feed this tank? I feed every other day with 1 cub frozen mysis, reef roids, marine snow , and fuel all mixed with tank water and taget and broadcast fed. I know alot of people barely ever (if at all) feed their corals but i have bisma worms and inverts that need food.(or at least i think they do) please let me know what you guys think. Am i feeding too much??

Yes 1 cube of Mysis every other day, plus reef roids and marine snow is way too much even with fish. Feed your christmas tree worms twice a week with phytoplankton and forget marine snow. I'm not sure on the Mysis amount with no fish but I think one cube every other day is way too much. Reef roids are a weekly thing usually.

Are your nutrients rising?

If yes, your feeding too much.

If not, then your not.

IMO, I think your feeding waay to much.

For instance in my 80G cube with 10 fish and many corals, I feed about 5oz of pellets twice a day, and 2 cubes of frozen. I have never spot fed my corals.

Nutrients not rising nitrate at 5 and phos at .25. I guess ill cut a mysis cube in half and see how that goes maybe every few days

I have 8 fish in my 90 and feed about half a cube a day with different foods

How often do you feed and does what you feed depend on type of coral?

Been feeding every other day now a mix of mysis reef roid phyto and amino acids. And yea i have some corals that need certain foods like phyto ,like my porites with bisma worms and barnacles. I would say to start feeding VERY INFREQUENTLY. Even now with me feeding every other day i still think its too much. Im still trying to get the right balance.

I feed my 120DT with 8 or 9 fish and a 60/40 mix of SPS/LPS once a day (if I remember) The largest fish is a Tomini Tang, the rest are in the 2-3" range. I use NLS , a mix of the .5 and 1mm pellets. Maybe 20-25 pellets max.

I do have a rock flower anemone, so I spot feed him a little bit of Rod's Original once a week or so. Everybody feasts that day.

I don't target feed any of the corals - they rely primarily on light, so if the LPS happen to catch some Rod's, great. If not, they are fine without.

IMHO, you are feeding WAY too much. Although nitrates are at 5, the PO4 is way nup there, and although things might look ok now, a algae outbreak may very well be on the horizon.

The hermits will appreciate something meaty every couple days. The SS Star is going to starve and die within a couple months. That's what they do in all but larger, very well established tanks. If you can return it for something else, I would.

hth!
