I think your rock does determine the age of your tank.
Example: I had a 46 gallon reef tank set up for 14 months when I decided to upgrade to a 72 gallon. 2 weeks before the upgrade a rose Bubble Tip Anemone came up for grabs locally for cheap and I couldn't turn it down. In the 72 I moved all 50 lbs of my existing rock to the sump and a bit in the display. I also added 50 lbs dry rock and 40 lbs of live sand that I rinsed for 2 hours w/ a garden hose to remove all silt particles. after filling the tank, I added a bottle of bacteria around midnight. At noon the next day, I transferred 8 fish, 6 corals, and my anemone! The anemone is still alive and so are all of the corals (all LPS). Maybe I got lucky, but I'll take it. I never feed my anemone BTW. I had a friend that fed his regularly and his died pretty quickly.
