I have read people describing their tanks as being a certain age, but not all those years necessarily in the same actual tank. I have had a tank since around 1987, and while I have switched tanks once, and have moved it a couple times, I have never had to cycle it because I always just transferred over my existing filtration. Does this mean my tank ( or system more precisely) is 28 years old?

I was thinking the samething. The way I look at it if you upgrade to a bigger tank with new equipment your tank clock restarts. You can still say I had that fish, rock or coral for x years but not the tank or system.

That's pretty much how I think about it.
I tell people my system is 3 years old because that is when I pretty much redid the whole thing, except for my HOB filter and my fish.
