Were going on a two week long vacating in about two weeks from now. I have purchased a fish mate F14 auto feeder and a Marine Magic ato. Both work great except when I use freshwater for the top off it lowers the salinity of the tank so I'm not sure what to do about that. Also there isn't anyone that can check up on the tank for us and there isn't enough time for some we know to learn everything that the tank needs. If anyone has any other suggestions for ways I should prepare the tank I would greatly appreciate it. :D
The tank is a bc 14 with a young pair of ocellaris and a snail and some hermit crabs.

Definitely upgrade the ato if it’s dumping too much water into the tank. I recommend this ato.

Check out the smart micro ato as well. It's worked flawlessly for me. Do a water change the day before you leave. Top off the fish feeder and you'll be good to go once you figure out your ato problem

Do a test run if you have time. I.e you are home but don't touch the tank at all, just observe. It showed me a few things I then planned for. I was away for 17 days. Had a couple coral casualties. Fish all alive.

It isn't that the top off tops off to much water, its just I almost always have to top off saltwater in the tank to keep the salinity stable.

Thats not normal.....
First, you want your return section of the AIO compartment full to its potential when you measure salinity.
This is your full level.
The ATO should only be replacing water back to the full mark as it evaporates.

Hi - enjoy the vacation. That is job one. Job two, and you are not going to like this, but please, please, please do whatever you can to have someone stop by and take a look at the tank while you are gone. If there isn't time to find a pet sitter who can stop by once a day to look find one that maybe can stop by should you text. Or if all that fails find a camera you can quickly set up to remove view on your own then call someone.

Years ago we went on a vacation, family reunion, so all of us are out at the same time. Enter Ca politics and ENRON, and power manipulation, brown outs, and vacation you can see a issue building here, right? Yeah, I'm out, family is out, extended family is out, power fails, AC breaker trips, house goes from 78 degrees to 100 plus in less than an hour, and trouble starts. I planned top off container for A and heat with faster evaporation went to Z which means it went bingo empty sooner. Sump dry, pumps seized, display went lower, no movement and excessive heat lost it all.

All that I needed was a neighbor to check or a pet sitter and I'd still have the tank today probably. I don't because I didn't plan properly. So I'm just sort of tossing it out there that while I understand you may not have time try and put something in place if possible. If that doesn't work make sure you check everything before you leave and size the ATO with room for extra just to be safe.

this is my first ato and maybe I was just having trouble setting it up. I'll be figuring it out later today. i will also try my best to find someone to check on the tank.

Thank you all for your input!:D

One more thing, it can get hot up where we live so we got a cooling fan and it works great but I cant leave it on the whole time and it will get to hot to keep it off. is there anything that i can do about that?

just make sure you have everything setup weeks before you go so you can do some trial test runs we were headed to europe march 31st for 2 weeks i had everything setup on my tank for automation then covid came lol

Do you have an Apex to control the fan, or you could use a simple timer to run the fan.

Lot of good info on here, dry run is smart.
One thing I would like to suggest tho is don't really change anything for a while leading up to a vacation imo. If it aint broke dont fix it kind of thing adding/changing things only enables something to happen that might not have before.

Thank you again everyone! just got back from vacation and everything looks great! :)
