When I remove Cheato from the sump, I just pull off clumps of cheato and throw it away.
This process tends to get detritis into the main display.
Also it seems to remove a significant amount of pods from the system when I throw it away.
Do you guys just cut off a chunk?
Any advice?

Put a filter on the inlet of your pump when performing Chaeto maintanence. When the detritus “dust storm” subsides remove the filter and wash it in tap water. If you want to save the pods, swish the filter or algae in a sample of tank water to dislodge the pods and then decide if the number you find is worth the rescue.

thanks. do most people pull off a chunk or cut off a chunk when removing cheato?

I cut. But detritus still gets around. Who cares.
