Hello I have had this 30 gallon for almost 8 months now and I have had this algae In it for at least 6 months. How should I clean it or what should I dose. I currently have 1 protein skimmer, UV sterilizer, and a hang on back filter. Should I get a media reactor with some pho’s van to reduce phosphates and take care of the silicates? One more thing I am using no live rock I have a fake rock from pet smart.

Hey there!

I have a bunch of questions- they'll mostly help me try and figure out which organism is slightly more likely. It will still be a guess without a scope, but it will be a better guess :)

1) Is this algae worse in the afternoon compared with the morning?
2) If you were to blow this algae with a turkey baster, would it come off the sand in strings/matts, or completely "dissolve" into the water column?
3) How often do you perform water changes?
4) What is the source of your water for top off/water changes. Is it RODI, tap water, or something else?
5) Do you notice any strings or air bubbles rising from this algae?
6) Is the algae on both the sand and the rock

I'll hold off on commenting about the tang in a 30 gallon for now while we try and get to the bottom of this ;)

Unrelated, but when you say fake rock, what is it made of? Is it a type of plastic?

no it usually stays the same over night and during the day it grows
when I blow it off the sand bed it blows a cloud off.
i performe water changes once every two weeks
the water I use for water changes is fro, my local fish store and for the top off I use crystal gyser drinking water
there is no strings from this alge but there is some air bubbles
yes the algae is both on rock and sand.
my Rock is hard plastic or something like that
