How small is too small for a refugium?

I’ve wanted to upgrade my tank for a while now, and was gifted a 40 gallon tall as an early Christmas present. Yay!

I initially intended to use my current reef tank (20 tall) as a refugium but it won’t fit in the new stand. A 10 gallon would fit but would that be too small for a refugium?

I only have a 4 gallon fuge on my Reefer 250 (all I could fit down there with all the stuff) and I still saw a large decrease in algae and Copepods. I think anything is better than nothing.

is the height or length the problem? cause a 20 long (30 inch long 13 high) will usually fit under a 36 inch stand...if a divider is in the way you may have to drop it in from the top first

You can get an inexpensixe 10 gallon sump kit on Ebay or at Fiji Cube and tuck a small skimmer and a filter sock in there as well....

It's a 40 tall, which is shorter than 36". That was my first instinct until I re-read. I have a 20 long under my 40 breeder. It makes for a super spacious sump for sure...

Did some math and it’s actually a 50 tall. Also, it’s a hand made stand courtesy of grandpa!

My 3.5 gallon refugium (converted from the Red Sea ATO reservoir) is enough to keep a thriving pod population in my Reefer XL 425 so my mandarin goby is well-fed.
