I just got a Yellow and he's at 2". I was a bit disappointed because he looks kinda big even if it's only 2". Do you think this is an ideal size? Have you ever got a tang that's smaller than this?

My Hippo Tang was about 1.5" when it arrived. But I specifically asked for a tiny one so it would be smaller than the pinnatus batfish, and not become aggressive to the bat

1-1/2" sailfin and blue tang. Love getting them small.

3" minimum

My tank raised yellow was 1.5 inches. Very pale yellow at that size but grew up to be a beautiful fish. My purple tang was 2” when I got her.

I bought all of my tangs under 3". Has been great watching them grow into adults over the past 4-5 years.

Hippo Tang about the size of a quarter.....maybe smaller. One year later it's over 6" now.

I might have posted this, if so sorry, my two scopas that currently live at my lfs whilst I sort them a tank out, little girl is sub one inch! ;)

They should be able to take nori sheets okay
Algae in my case, as much as they can graze, they are not designed to try and digest a lot of frozen meaty items.
Thank you both. I’ll keep adding nori in the tank but I think the snails and crabs are eating most of it. Tiny hippo dives for the rocks when I get close so I’m not sure if it’s picking at the nori or not. It did come out and eat some frozen real quick; I just want it to eat so I feel the need to give it whatever it wants. The rock in the tank is mature and from the ocean but full of bubble algae and not so much tasty tang algae. Any additional advice is very much welcomed. It’s amazing how much I love this fish already. ;Shy

I bought 3 yellow tangs over 3 years ago for my 155 gallon reef tank when they were all about the size of a quarter. The salesman at the LFS told me that he couldn't offer me the usual 14 day guarantee because they don't recommend putting more than one tang of the same species in a tank. I still have all 3. They have a pecking order and there is a slight size difference in all 3, but they are thriving, and about 3-4 inches now. I bought a powder blue tang shortly before the yellow tangs. He was about the size of a half dollar and was a model member of my reef tank community for most of that time, but grew to about 6-7 inches and was just to large for the tank. Never mean, but the size of him and his restlessness frightened the other fish, so I traded him about 2 months ago for some corals from the aquarium service that I use from time to time. They found him a good home in a 350 gallon aquarium. Your yellow tang will grow quickly. Mine love nori, Hikari seaweed extreme pellets, and harvested macro algae.

Received a blue hippo at 2" which is now doubled in size in less than 6 months. Getting them small is ideal as they do seem to grow quickly. Then again, it depends on what other tangs you already have in your DT and their size.
