Ok, I have not had a problem with a faulty heater in my 55 gallon bow front yet. I keep reading horror stories about people coming home to cooked tanks. I am just asking anyone that is experienced in this for their opinion on how to keep this from ever happening to me or at least significantly lower my chances?

I am currently using a Jager submersible glass heater in my sump and I keep my temp at about 76 - 77 degrees. I just started collecting SPS and growing out some sticks. Any opinions here would be appreciated. I want to avoid the end of the world for my little reef :)

O also if you have any suggestions on some products out there I would appreciate that too. Im not looking to spend a ton of money but i could drop 100 bucks if its a super safe heating method.

Get a ranco controller or a normal controller and then go ie reefkeeper or Neptune ..something along those lines

How do you manage to not use heaters at all Jedi? I keep my house around 70 - 72 degrees isnt this too cold for corals?

+1 on a controller. I got my RKL for that reason. I still monitor temps closely, but feel much better having the backup. I also use a heater with a controller so I can easily see the settings.

You know something I believe mechanical error is unpredictable and bad luck. In my experience with equipment the best anyone could ever do to avoid breakdown is to maintain. The heater should be wiped clean of any debris and then inspected for any cracks in the shell, look for light lines on black shell heater, or dark or white lines on clear glass heaters with the white mesh on the inside. At the bottom of a clear glass heater in the bulb maybe you'll see residue build up, in this case and in crack case, it's best to replace.
