Ph, Alk, Cal, what is considered high and low when compared to the other two.

Being a newby myself, I have asked myself these questions and searched R2R with little success. I am sure that many many other newbies have asked themselves this same question. I have seen several reefers mention that with a certain level of ph your alk is to high for that level. Does this have to do with a lower level of ph having more hydrogen ions, thus sps frags not being able to get rid of hydrogen ions they produce as they consume alk and cal. The opposite being said for higher ph levels, you can run higher alk and cal levels because the sps frags can get rid of hydrogen ions easier thus consuming more alk and cal. If this is the case then what would be considered an acceptable level for a ph of 8.0, or in my case 8.18 for both alk and cal? I do feel that if we shed a little more light on this subject more newbie reefers, including myself would be less likely to crash or tanks.

I let my tank dictate what it wants to do, for a while I was chasing higher numbers but for some reason my tank stays more stable with and gives me better colors with lower numbers my averages are 7-8dkh, 350Ca, 1300+ mag, nitrates are staring to get back to normal or lower range from 30ppms down to about 10ppm and phosphate also back down to .10 from .40( this happened after a treatment) but my tank naturally went back to its “normal” readings I been getting since I started

Edit: my PH ranges from 7.9-8.4

pH doesn’t matter as much as people tend to think. Alk cal mag all in balance is what matters.

The theory that higher PH will give you “faster growth” but I think like mostly anything in this hobby is just hobby observation my PH I like to think it’s a bit on the high side and at one point trying to see if it was true I tried keeping my Kh 9+ and calcium 400+ but I struggled to keep them stable at higher levels with no visible advantages, did it for about 7-8 months then got lazy trying to keep up and altering and just let my tank settle again
