I found my forest fire monti had been snipped in half yesterday by something. then found the shell of a crab which had shedded. Its got big black claws so assuming its not good after looking around online.

How can i catch it, i have never seen it besides its shell.

Thanks

there are crab diy traps on line they work ok. You could spear it if all else fails. Gotta spot him though & find it's cave. Look at night when lights are out.

They can be pretty tricky to catch and take some perseverance, with a quick google search you can find some DIY traps you can make out of water bottles or you can buy small pre manufacturers traps. I have caught a couple by putting food in the bottom of small glass and leaning it at a 45 deg angle against rock structure, when something crawls in for the food they can’t make there way back out up the slippery glass surface.

I had to catch some emerald crabs that were eating my montis once a few months back. I went in at night with a red flashlight and a pair of forceps (I used a coral hemostat from bulkreefsupply) The crabs in my case were unable to see red light and I simply grabbed them mid body and worked them off the rocks. The crabs were unharmed in my case but I did put them into a puffer tank so they might have become a meal at some point. I thought it was a fluke how easily I caught the first crab this way but I tried it a second time and again I did not have any issues catching the crab. I would ensure the room is really dark with minimal ambient lighting as the crab could be alerted by shadows. I would also avoid strong vibrations in the room as this could also trigger the crab to hide.

I had an emerald crab for a short period of time, it was perfectly happy and eating all day every day out in the open during the day, then it was just dead! Could it have been this evil crab that killed him?
Im going to need an emerald to attack bubble alage appearing in lots of different locations in the tank.
