I'm looking at cleaning my live sand bed and wondered if I should do it at all or will it disturb the phosphates and nitrates in my sand. I was going to use a syphone bit don't know if that's the best way to go about it?
Many thanks

A DSB I will usually just siphon off from the surface when I do WC's, and not disturb below.
A shallow bed could be vac'd

A good CUC can help keep clean.

Why do you want to clean your sand bed? Any issues or just feeling it’s time?

Sand beds are complex ecosystems. They might even contain more of the nitrogen processing than live rocks. My impression is that most aquarists who vacuum sand beds do it in sections.

You will definitely disturb nitrogen processing. You might see an increase in the level of nitrate in the water when you disturb it too much, but the sand bed should recover. If you have a heavy bioload, a nitrate spike could appear within a week if you disturbed the nitrogen processing too much.

You will have to discover how big a section and how deep to vacuum. Maybe go small and slow to start. Slowly increase the vacuuming pace. Monitor nitrate and phosphate more often than usual to understand the impact of sand vacuuming. Watch for nuisance algae and cyanobacteria growth.

Good luck.

I use a gravel vac. Works pretty good but sometimes it’s best to do a little section at a time so not to stir up too much
