Hi,

Currently i own a waterbox with a sump. After the refugium is the filter sponge then the return pump. This issue im running into is the filter sponge is getting clogged with algae due to the refugium. What is a quick effective way to remove the algie off the sponge? Ive tried washing it with water but still loads far down inside, ive tried hydrogen peroxide. Is there an acid i can use that will just eat it away or something anyone knows of? I have an extra sponge so i can leave the old one for a week or so to clean and dry off of anything used to clean it. Link is the sponge used for the aquarium.

I take the sponges in my filters every time I do a water change, and scrub/squish/and spray them with warm water….then I also replace them every now and then.

Issue is this is a hard sponge so hard to clean, think of it like hard top roman noodle.

Oh, I see. Is buying replacement sponges an option? Perhaps you can just swap out for a more pliable sponge. I don't see how that would be a problem.

Ohhhhh ok I see, sorry I didn’t get that at first….I know citric acid works to remove calcium buildups, and people use it to clean equipment. You could try maybe soaking it in some citric acid? I’m not sure if it would help algae…but it’s definitely something you can try.
