Due to algae I nearly lost my lovely orange lepto, it seems it has potential to come back but keeps getting covered by a thin layer of algae, oddly only on the coral and not really on the plug. I've been scrubbing it off but am afraid of injuring the coral, is there any other things I could try?

Just blow it off periodically. Unless it's hair algae in which case I'd do H2O2 spot treatment.

Coral feeder or turkey baster.

If you don't have some tool like this to blow off rocks and such, I'd highly recommend it. It's arguably a must have tool for reefing.

Yep, turkey baster and some vigorous squirting. A turkey baster is one of the best tools you can get for your tank. A long pipette is also good to have, but the baster is very important.
