Any advice on how to clean connectors ?

I would take it apart and clean with alcohol, and/or replace rusty connectors. Looks like that has been used in a very moist environment...
 
You can buy cleaners specifically for the purpose at electronic parts stores. They come in spray or liquid. While there pick a small packet of electrical grease. The liquid can be applied gently with a Q-tip. You could also use a little viniger on a Q-tip if the contacts are really bad. Clean both the connector and the cable, after drying use a little electrical grease after to help keep it clean in the future.
