I have what I think is some form of sponge that has hitchhiked into my tank via rock and or coral. Question is how do I keep it controlled or even eradicate it. I've seen it get out of control on some zoa colonies already and seem to have spread to even the underside of my stylo colony.
My initial thought is a large angel species which feast on sponges but I hesitate because I have a mixed reef with a lot of fleshy LPS + a ton of zoanthids.
Any other suggestions on this problem?

Sponges feed on particulate matter in suspension ... sometimes a simple improvement of mechanical filtration, such as the placement of filter socks, is sufficient to control them.

I do use 200 micron felt filter socks already and change them out every 4 days.
This sponge is very evasive, I can actually see it spreading like plant roots on a weekly basis.

I see that most of the ferric oxide used for phosphate removal also claims that it removes silicates but is their a specific media that will address silicates only?

TIA

Some say that some aluminum-based media, such as "SERA Silicate Clear", are more efficient than GFO for removing silicates, but the first step would be to test the aquarium water for silicates.

Blue tuxedo urchin my help keep your sponge's under control.

I had this same sponge a while back. I just gently pulled it off and it actually worked. I just got back from vacation and have several other types of sponge to deal with.
