What is the best way to cycle a frag tank with bare bottom and no live rock

Will it have a sump? If so I would put some LR from your current system in there with some of your water.

Bump..I'm setting up a new bare bottom frag tank as well, but no sump. My question is can I just fresh sw or water from my dt and be good to go? Or will I need to plan on a cycle for some reason?

Put water from you established DT in there and keep up with params and water changes....should be fine....( when you do water changes use water from your DT as new water for your frag tank)

I always thought to use fresh saltwater the reason your getting rid of the water was to get rid of the nitrates and then to add all your chemicals into the water?

That is true for typical WC's, but he meant for cycling the frag tank. Once it's been a 3-4 weeks and your parameters are looking good, then yes, you would go about regular Wc's with newly mixed SW.

Why will the tank need to cycle if there is no substrate or live rock, with die off? Just a bare bottom setup.

If you plan on going sumpless, you will need something for bacteria to colonize on. Whether it's live rock, a sponge filter etc.

If your DT is healthy you shouldnt have any nitrates or very little if any.....and even though fresh salt mix is fresh clean water it has a little bit of ammonia that needs to be consumed by an established tank...therefore using established tank water to do WC on the cycling tank speeds up cycling because there is bacteria in the water column of the established tank..
