I have a nice blue Acro that took me a year to grow from a 1” frag to a 4” diameter mini colony. I picked up a green stick and placed it about 6” away from the blue one.

It’s been about 6 months and the 1” green stick has just about overtaken the blue mini colony.
I took off a chunk of the blue stick to regrow it so I’m safe on that.

My only dilema is how does one control an acro that has explosive growth?

Far right is the area as you can see the blue acro. On the far right is the chunk I saved to regrow.

Thanks for any tips!

Turn your flow off and spread some kalk paste on it and let it sit for 15-20mins. Looks like M. digitata btw, not an acro and grows much faster

That's def a monti digi and that green variety is a heinously fast grower. I'd move that acro.

My go to is to trim them, but when there's warfare at the base, as long as the base is well established, even if it gets overtaken the coral will be robust enough typically.

Depending on how much kalk paste you need to use, I assume there could be some risk of an alk spike no?

Great recommendations on kalk, I might do that prior to a WC.

As per fragging the digi, at the moment, it’s growing out vs. up. It’s hugging the rock pretty well. I might just nuke it since I have another colony on the left side of my tank.

Thanks all

Nice sharp pair of bone cutters will get nice and close to the rock as well. I usually do that and epoxy any left over living tissue if I gotta prune something entrusting. Sharp scraper tools work as well.

I also spread epoxy on the parts I can't pry/cut off with bone cutters. I have 3 particular encrusting montis I regret putting in my system.

I actually shut down my last tank due to out of control montis.....never again lol.

Yikes. After clipping an inch back from the acro, now I have little green Monties on the sand bed that appear to be thriving. I might take down the montie and just give it it’s own rock, then trim back as it grows.
Great problem to have I guess Lol

Update on the monti…

I’ve since diced and sliced it only to get frustrated at trying to cut LR w/bone cutters.
Decided to get some cheap epoxy putty from Home Depot and used 1.5 tubes of it over the monti. Skimmer is off and will probably stay off for a week as this stuff drives skimmers wild.

I’ve used up to 3/4 stick with no I’ll effects, hopefully 1.5 sticks of EP 200 is fine.

We shall see, fingers crossed!

Update…
Acros are ticked! Been battling getting whatever chemical is in my tank from the epoxy. 1/2 my acros are pale but have polyp extensions.

So, don’t use to much!
