How to failure proof return pump from low water?

I have an apex controller. If my ato stops working or the pump fails...what are my options or the best option so the return pump doesn't run dry and risk a fire etc?

Or having a low water switch that kicks this pump off

How does that work? I reverse a float switch and when the powers on the pumps on and when it loses power aka too low the pumps off

I already have a breakout box for my apex. I haven't used it yet though.

Backup ato not an option...I barely have space as it is...
