How To Fix A Reversed Powerhead Like a Man
Everyone and their brother has had a powerhead start up in reverse, especially Koralia brand, but not everyone has a backup pump on hand.
Like good puppies, Koralia will send you a replacement part to repair this glitch. Sometimes it is not the solution. So now what do you do??? you do not want fish to get sucked into a plastic blender! thats not good for either party.
When it comes down to it you have to put yourself first. These animals lives depend on that pump blowing the correct way! When Koralias are functioning they are Great water movers. in reverse they blow backwards in a cone towards the glass. This is terribly annoying.
1.Unplug
2.Insert *finger into impeller, stopping it before it can move (rigid airline worked for the nano size)
3. Plug in
4. Pull out Finger
5. its blowing out of the front again, tell your fish you are sorry you did not do a closed loop or surge device. Maybe next time.
6. Put a protector over the pump..plastic aquarium planters work great for nearly every hole without restricting flow or allowing snail blockage...a.k.a. Powerhead Constipation.
I have a tiny one that came with a nano tank I got used. As soon as I plugged it in it was screwed up. I figured I could set it in my mangrove tank for aeration since there were no fish, It just hung in the middle of the tank.
Well I am in the process of planning my next tank and I was testing a powerhead I am using for it...it went in reverse as well!!!. I wasn't having this..I thought of what it was doing that for and I am guessing it just got jammed with something and skipped a beat...thus kicking it the other way. The only thing that I thought I could do (after plugging and unplugging a gaboozillian times) was to unplug it once more and ram my finger in the front and prevent it from moving when I plug it back in. THe pump goes KAKGAAKDDDDD then I released my finger and it worked again. I have to do this everytime (so far) that I have plugged it in, but I do not have to find a pump in the mean time while waiting for its replacement part.
I went to the mangrove tank and fixed that one the exact same way...now it is blowing sand around...which I will let take its course. it should make a hill somewhere...im sure the hermit will like that.
*A powerhead can be VERY painful if you do not have proper grip on the impeller. If the thin blade slices your arm off I am not accountable, proceed with CAUTION and the assumption you will be in pain. With proper technique this
*(can be)* a very painless way to fix it...
*()*Can be meaning that if by chance there is a short in the pump you could very well be electrocuted to High Heaven and/or other facilities you may find appropriate for the end of your existence as a living human. Thus...be as careful as humanly possible, after all...you do not want to die this way...it is shocking.
End note: Get pumps that are not likely to have this malfunction BEFORE you have to deal with finger prodding the nori shredder. cuts in saltwater are No fun. Electrocution isn't either!
