Hi,
I'm used to taking pictures in manual mode with my cannon using the lcd panel, digital zoom and manual focus to get the best focus possible.

I just purchased an avast porthole and I'm curious how I will best use the focus since I'm assuming I will be stuck on auto since I won't have access to the manual focus adjustment with the porthole blocking it. I've often noticed that AF just doesn't cut it on zoomed in shots.

Any insight?

Personally, I use AF on 99% of my shots. I just move the focus point on the LCD or in the viewfinder to where I want it.
That said, you should be able to clamp the thumbscrews down on the focus ring of the lens, then grab/rotate the entire portal to focus. :)

You're a genius. For some reason my AF isn't working when I'm using my LCD screen. I'll have to see if there's an option I'm missing.

It was a setting deep in the menu to allow AF to work during "live" photo mode, but that was only half the solution. Now that it was at least TRYING to AF during live mode, it still wasn't focussing correctly. I have an older version of the same kit lens that I swapped on which works flawlessly, so I guess there's something wrong with the newer lens... Guess I'll just do without image stablization until i spring for a tamron :)

I've got mine clamped onto my 100mm focal ring by the thumbscrews just like d2mini said. Works like a charm! It even came with a rubberized cozy that's serves good for surrogate focusing ring, I also like that they put rubber feet on it so you don't have to worry about it getting scratched when you set it down. I just got mine the other day, and have only gotten to play with if for a few minutes, but I'm glad I ordered it. Now everything needs to grow so they are worth photographing.

Thanks for the reply :) I also have some growing to do. Looking at the used Tamron macros on Amazon well but I think I'll give battle corals some money first haha
