How to frag this coral

I’m really not even sure what type of coral this is. I picked it up because I have plans to have a coral encrust a 3d model. I don’t want to attach the full plug to the model. Would it be possible to just cut off the chunk that’s poking up or would that kill the coral. In my mind, I should be able to just slide a knife under the lip of the hump. Just don’t want to kill the coral. The plug itself has plenty of growth.

no it will not kill it, break it off, and glue it using small dab of super glue under. once it grows a circle around it, break it off and re-glue it else where again. this same coral I'm trying to grow it on my backwall of my 8ft tank. almost complete.

So it’s safe to just pop that chunk off? The big blob. The whole frag plug is covered at this point. But the plug is too big for my 3d model.

This is a monti and the chunk you see is normal and typical

Without a dremel or bandsaw encrusters might be a little tricky if the disk it is on is somewhat thick.
If you could score and snap it off that should not be an issue however before doing so I would have an iodine solution (like lugols) on hand as it will help immensely with the recovery process.
