How to get clowns to host anemone

You can try the net method, but I've never been a fan of it since you risk stressing out both the fish and anemone. You can try the picture trick. Print out a picture of a clown in an anemone, and tape it to the tank where your clown is likely to see it all the time. Or same thing with a laptop or computer monitor, play a video of clowns in an anemone. Might take time but it's much less stressful on the fish and nem than trying to force them together.
 
How long have you had the nem and the clowns? Mine just took time. The clowns lived in a corner when the tank was first setup. Then moved to a Duncan Coral. And probably a few months after the nem went in the female discovered it. The male followed her over a bit later.

This really works? That’s interesting! I’ll certainly give it a shot. Don’t want to risk stressing any of them out.

That’s awesome! Glad to hear yours took finally! I will get the nem tomorrow, but I’ve had the clowns for probably 6 months.

Hmmmm - Ive always placed the clowns tank first then later added anemone and they were on the anemone in no time.
 
What ended up happening for me was my female is fairly abusive to the male, putting him in his place at least every hour. She has even twice so far chased him into the back filtration of my biocube. So the male attempted to start taking refuge in my RBTA slowly building up a tolerance to get away from the female. It took the male a few weeks to build up a full tolerance with the female chasing him whenever she saw him near the anemone. Once he was able to hide in it, it took the female all of two days to acclimate to the anemone and go after him in his new safe zone.

My daughters did the "hosting video on a loop" on an ipod, propped against the glass. I thought they were nuts. Within a couple of weeks, the clowns accepted the anemone as their host.

They still take credit and I still say it was coincidental as the clowns had been in the tank with the nem for months before the video experiment.

My opinion, it just takes time for the clowns to use the nem as a host, especially if the nem is not the clown species' natural host. But it's free to download a video and play it for the clowns. Certainly can't hurt anything.

Oh wow! That’s interesting. I had a clownfish a few years back that was a mean son of a gun! Any time I tried to clean he would bit me. I was shocked at first. These are much more docile than the last clownfish. Glad they were able to finally able to take to the anemone. Thanks for sharing.

I have to say, it seems highly possible it’s coincidental right? They don’t have brains capable of higher thought processes. Then again, maybe they are able to mirror behaviors. I’m going to do it anyway just for fun. This is the picture I’ve decided I am going to use. Lol

My clowns never cared much for the anemones i put into the tank, until input in a carpet anemone.

As soon as it was in the tank it was like a light switch being thrown.

The biggest female is almost always in it. She sleeps in it like on a bed.

I was afraid the andmone wasn’t going to take that kind of abuse but it seems to like it.

a clown picture will help if your anemone is close to your glass. clowns are territorial and will attack the intruder to their space so they will be clsose to the anemone and hopefully get a feel for it. this is a real issue with tank bred clowns which have never seen an anemone unfortunately. mos tof mine have take to anemones unassisted after 3-18 months.

I had to chuckle about this one!! What I'm going to say is true but probably coincidence.
I bought a pair of bonded clowns and bought a large anemone (see photo) a week later. When I stuck the anemone in, I had Beethoven's 9th symphony (the scherzo that was used in that movie) playing at an insane volume. The clowns took to it immediately and after a couple of months started laying eggs (a hatch is due tomorrow night) behind the tentacles edge on a huge LR. You can see little silver eyes in the attached. Today is day 7. They always hatch on day 8. Next time I'm probably using a tile (or I'll fork out for a proper trap) and transferring to a breeding tank if I really feel like raising fry. I have enough work to do with this 1200 litre set up as it is and I ain't young anymore.
I find it interesting (and somewhat amusing under these circumstances) that I'm a musician/composer/pianist with something classical playing all the time when I'm not at the piano. I always wonder if the musical vibrations affect my fish. They are all so healthy and they get along beautifully - a bit unlike that poor man in clockwork orange stuck in a room with a 20 inch speaker under his floor!!
