hi guys, I’ve not been in the hobby very long, is there any tips on how to get my common clown pair to host to an anemone and if so, are there any certain types of anemone I would need?

Cheers guys

Actually it is the anemone that hosts the clownfish. Almost like calling the anemone home :) There are a bunch of different ideas on how to do this, tape a picture of a clown in an anemone and tape it to the side of the tank, play a video on a laptop or screen near the tank of a clown swimming in an anemone. There is also the tube trick, but I don't like that one as you confine the clown to an extremely small enclosed area and basically force it into the anemone. I'd try one of the first two options :) As far as what type of anemone, bubble tip and carpet anemeones seem to be the two most popular, while they don't normally host in the wild, they are known to in the aquaria trade :)

Thank you very much

Most clowns we buy today are tank raised, so they never seen an anemone before. I bought my first anemone with a clown that was already hoisting it. But after putting them in the tank it took several months before the clown even looked at the anemone. But when it did, it never left only to feed. I missed the clown swimming around the tank like a dog wagging it's tail. So be careful what you wish for.

Thank you mr. Limpid I’ll bare that in mind

Tank raised has no bearing on whether clowns will find a nem. A few generations of captive breeding isn't going to "undue" millions of years of evolution. Pair clowns with their natural symbiont and hosting will take place within a day. I'm assuming common clown is a reference to Occys or Percs. Occy natural symbionts are H magnifica, S gigantean, and S mertensii. Perculas are the same minus the Merts. Wouldn't recommend any of those nems as a first nem though. If common clown is a Maroon reference they're a natural for Bubble Tips.

Mixing non-symbionts is luck of the draw as to whether hosting will happen. Easiest way to have hosting is to get Clarkii clowns. They're a natural symbiont for every species of host nem.
