I picked up two scolys recently, and one is nice and puffy, while the other is pretty withdrawn. Not to the point that the skeleton is showing, it's just not really fluffy at all.

Does anyone have experience with puffing them up? Does it come down to regular feeding? I saw Reef Nerd's scoly in one of his videos was so puffed up it was literally flopping over the edges of the skeleton, and pushing up against the glass. It was wild.

Will add pics soon.

Mine are always real fluffy the day after feeding almost to the point where the flesh spills on the glass. One thing I learned from watching Kris at ACI aquaculture is they prefer lower temps. 75-77 and of course very low lighting. Feed those suckers 2-3 times a week and you will see how happy they get. And they like very low flow too maybe the one with the skeleton is showing is getting too much flow on that side.

Thank you! Funny you should say that. It’s looking quite a bit puffier today after yesterday’s feeding.

Forgive the mostly dead chalice in the middle. I’m trying to bring it back.

Good water quality and parameters and feed 2-3x per week

Thanks! That’s the plan. It’s actually already puffed up since yesterday’s feeding. I’ll keep up the routine. Kind of annoying having a coral that needs spotfeeding to thrive, but it seems worth it.

Looks great brother!! Watch this video it’s by far the best Scoly care video ever. Kris at ACI is hands down one of the best

Feed them!!! My pink one looks like this 24/7, fed 2-3x a week at night. The purple/pink/blue stripe one is a new addition but is getting fluffier :)

Nice!

So, this brings up another question: is it best to feed them at night, or can you just get them to elicit a feeding response with a bit of food, then feed them during the day? I have a new born, so the more sleep I can get the better.

I feel that it’s best to feed them at night for a month or two, but that’s just how long it took for my scolies to begin feeding in the day. If your scolies are already extending feeding tentacles during the day I see no reason to wait until night. Just make sure no fish/inverts are harassing them for the food. I feed LRS food just cause it’s smaller chunks and I don’t have to thaw a whole cube just to feed the scolies a tiny bit. :)

Appreciate it. So far, they open up during the day if presented with food.

I also just ordered Fauna Marin LPS pellets. I plan on using Polyp Booster and then feeding those. We’ll see how it actually goes in practice.

Should be fine, mine have taken pellets, just make sure they’re small enough. Corals are at risk for choking and dying on foods that are too large, I’ve seen it and it’s not pretty :(.

Yikes. Thanks for the heads up. I got the medium size, so I don’t think they’ll be terribly large.

Scolies are pretty chunky anyway, I doubt that it’ll choke on a medium pellet. Just something to be aware of if you decide to start feeding your other lps/nems. Let’s see your scoly get fat!
