Hey my tank is only about 3 months old so I know I shouldn't have SPS yet probably. But I got a piece of a Monti for free and I am trying my best to grow it.

It was originally green when I got it. When I put it up in my tank it started turning purple. Now its completely purple. But it had 1 tiny string of hair algae growing on it.

So I read that giving it so more flow would help prevent that. So I gave it some more flow. Now it has this brown algae kinda sticking to its peaks. I read something about using a soft toothbrush on it but I wanted to confirm something like that before doing it.

Wondering what I can do to help it.

Well.... it is possible I have no idea what it is as well. Haha very new and just going off what someone told me.

Same question though. I imagine the brown stuff growing on it is not good

Looking at pics of Goni it def doesn't have the polyps sticking out like that though. Not sure if maybe it was a different kind... The polyps are all on the surface really close to the skeleton.

Try blowing it off with a turkey baster otherwise the tissue will die underneath. I don't think it's a goniopora. It's either an encrusting monti or an acropora.

I tried the turkey baster. It didn't get any off. It seems to be attached quite well.

Do you think it's getting too much light?

Giving it another inspection it does seem to be spreading onto the rock around it. So maybe the encrusting kind is correct? Haha I thought it was going to be one of those monti's that grew out like a plate from the rock
