I have a rock with a lot of bright orange mushrooms that really adds a nice splash of color. They have been behaving untill recently. I have 3 individuals that have found their way to other areas. Its a 180 gallon with a some softies, LPS and 4 sps and I like the orange rock but would like to stop the spread before I have a tank full of pretty orange mushrooms. Is there anyway to kill the single ones like aiptasia or should I just cut them off and wait for them to grow back and cut them again and rinse and repeat?

Use a sharp woodworking chisel to pair away a slice of the live rock under the foot where it is attached. That will essentially give you a frag of the mushroom, and not leave behind anything to grow back.

mechanical remove will probably get you 3 or 4 baby mushrooms, sprouting up where the original was. I tried to control palyzoa before, got rid of most of them, but got lazy about the bits I left, but they all grew back. I used high pH 14 water and a pipet to kill off the paly. A few drops injected into it's mouth and it'll die, with no spawn. just keep the fish away from the white kassawater bubbles the precipitate as the 14 pH water touches your sea water. others have used lemon juice, or low pH waters, I haven't tried that, but go ahead and google it. to make pH 14, I did the usual method of making soda ash from baking soda.

If you're lazy about the removal, yes it may be incomplete.

Physical removal by cutting a slice Below the foot will leave nothing to grow back.

F aiptasia works usually. If it doesn't work on the first treatment just hit it again quickly and that's done.

Thanks all. I'll try and break a small peice of the rock to get the foot as it will probably be more effective at full removal and their location should allow for that. I don't know why I didn't think of that o_O I have green hairy mushrooms too but the nems surrounding them keep them at bay. Not sure why I introduce this stuff into my tank.:thinking-face:

Sell them!

Sell them!
That's the plan. I have small tote in the sump full of rock rubble that I put some into when I pulled them from another tank and broke the rock up to put some in where they are now. I also have another chamber of the sump that is filling up with bubble tip nems that I toss down when they detach. If I keep it up I'm going to need a bigger sump. Sad part is the stuff I put down there looks better than some of the sfuff the display.
