How do I go about lowering alkalinity in newly mixed reef crystals saltwater?

I have read about muriatic acid? Is it safe for a reef tank as long as I raise the ph back before I use it?

It won't impact anything else except pH, which it lowers a lot. Aeration will slowly bring it back up.

Here's a copy and past of an old post of mine for a guy who wanted to use it to drop the alk from 13 to 7 dKH in 13 gallons of salt water.:

Yes, you just add the acid. Be very careful with straight muriatic acid. It can easily burn you, especially your eyes.

The "acidity" (that being essentially negative alkalinity) of normal (not low fume type) muriatic acid straight from the bottle is about 11,000 meq/L.

So adding 1/11,000 of the water volume as this acid will drop alkalinity by 1 meq/l (2.8 dKH).

You want a drop of 13-7 = 6 dKH, or 2.1 times that amount, so you'd add 1/5,100th of the water volume.

13 gallons ~ 49 L

1/5100 of 49 L = 9.6 mL

So I'd add 5 ml and stir well for a few minutes and see what alkalinity you get. Then dose again assuming it seems on the right track.

You'll need to aerate well after adding the acid to blow off the excess CO2 and bring up the pH.

Thank you for the help how long should I aerate the water for before using it 24hrs?

I'm curious, why do you want to lower the alk in your newly mixed water?

Because I feel 12dkh is a bit high and would rather run my tank around 8.5-9dkh Or should I try running a higher all level??

But I have like 10 buckets of reef crystals I bought on sale and rather use it before switching to a new salt so I am not wasting money I bought the reef crystals when I first started out and did very little research which now I do a lot of

same.....
wouldn't it just be easier to use regular IO salt instead of paying extra money for higher levels that your bringing down yourself

EDIT: posted at the same time as your reply to my question lol

Yes it would but I already have the reef crystals so I don’t want to waste it due to that would be wasting money to

I had the same issue with Red Sea Coral Pro. Your best bet is to just switch to a lower Alk salt. This way you can add Alk to the new mix if low, and match your current system parameters.

I am considering that just didn’t want to waste 10 buckets of salt I already had

EDIT: WHOA ten buckets!? I see now why you're trying to alter it rather than just switch brands. lol

Although, honestly... you could just sell the bucks and move on to another brand. Be less of a headache in the long run

Yea I went a little overboard when petsmart had it on sale for 25$ a bucket lol I have thought about selling it but can’t seem to get anyone local to want it and it wouldn’t make sense to try and ship

What is your tanks alk at now? If you keep it at 9ish and your doing water changes fo about 10% with the 12dkh salt it will barely raise it up. Its higher dkh to replenish what was used between water changes. I use the red sea pro it's about 12-13dkg when mixed. I keep my tank at 10, when I do a 15g water change it doesnt change my tank alk at all.

I try to keep it at 8.5 with dosing but it’s only a 29 gallon with a 10 gallon sump

I did this a few times with muriatic acid. It works well. It took longer than expected for the pH to equilibrate. I would circulate heavily for at least 2 days before adding it to my tank.

Did you have any issues with perception due to such long circulation? I notice if I circulate reef crystals to long it has a ton of perception

I don’t recall precipitation. I don’t think it will be a problem.

Regular IO is just as high.
