How to make filling those bottles for water testing easier!

OMG

I was going nuts trying too fill the vile for water testing to the stupid line ! I would overfill then try an pour some out then it would be below the line. Then I would add some back in and "@#!%" its above the line again ! :mad:

Well I was in my local pharmacy and discovered dosing syringes for medicine. They are about $3. Just suck up water from your tank in the syringe then fill the vile to the line. Easy as heck! I got the bottom of the curve (water line is curved but I am sure you noticed) right to the bottom of the white line. top edges to the top of the line.

I'm so new to all this stuff. Perhaps you all know this and i'm the last to figure it out, but I just thought I would share anyway.

Good share for those using the API kits, and welcome to R2R...

When you upgrade at some point, most of the better kits come with dosing syringes. They are always good to have around for spot feeding, supplement dosing, etc....

I work in distribution, and I sell syringes to all my aquatic accounts that carry API test kits. I usually sell 12cc syringes with a catheter tip to make it easier

Syringes are the most used equipment in my reef tool box.

If needed large animal veterinarians or farm/ranch supply stores will have an excellent selection of larger syringes usually upto about 50ml. Amazon probably has them too.

Catheter tips and slip tips are handiest I find. Luer locks tips are not as handy for reef tanks.

I got one a while ago from my LFS that has a slide on the top to select the measurement then you pull the thingy on the syringe all the way and it only takes what you selected. It is awesome, but they don't sell them anymore for some reason and mine is getting old and not as accurate anymore.

I did pick up a bunch of different sizes from BRS though. Couldn't live without them!

If you go to Tractor Supply of somewhere with large animal vet stuff they have syringes in many sizes. I have 10, 12 and 30cc syringes I use on my tank.
I put large gauge blunt needles on them.

Measurement of volumesEdit

A meniscus as seen in a burette of colored water. '20.00 mL' is the correct depth measurement.
When reading a depth scale on the side of an instrument filled with liquid, such as a water level device, the meniscus must be taken into account in order to obtain an accurate measurement. Depth must be measured with the meniscus at eye level (to eliminate parallax error) and at the center of the meniscus, i.e. the top of a convex meniscus or the bottom of a concave meniscus.

Manufacturers of glassware and other tools calibrate their measurement marks to account for the meniscus. This means that any instrument is calibrated for a specific liquid, usually water.

I use both salifert and colombo kits and they come with syringes. I guess I assumed all kits did. I learn something new everyday.

Dosing Syrings are a game changer. My 1st few months I suffered until with API test kit. Then I came up on Red Sea test kits and they change the game with the dosing syringes included in the kit.

I use the cheap plastic pipettes currently with my api test kit. I'm just in the soaking rock (dry pukani I got a year ago and only recently started prepping so full of phosphates) in a brute right now so haven't opened the Red Sea test kit I have yet. My Hanna Checker for phosphate didn't come with a syringe either. Time to add a few to my cart to always be prepared.
