Have you ever wanted to speed up the process of Coraline algae growth? With this easy tip you can start your tank out with the purplest of rock.

What you need:
Strong actinic light
Container of saltwater
Flow
Rock to be purpled
Seeder rock

Stick this container of rock somewhere and forget it. Top it off when needed but ignore it completely and never turn off the light

If you want to dose the water with something I have extremely good luck with the purple bottle of Reef Accelerator by Instant Ocean.

Here is my purpling station. It illuminates my fish room well and I always have a tote of rock for emergencies. (After all you have to change out your rock every 6 months...not!!!)

Nothing happens quick in a reef tank.

Hmm... granted the PAR is low with actinics, but I would still wonder about photoinhibition.

I've had the best luck growing coraline algae by doing the following:
-Maintaining good clean water
-Good lighting
-Keeping alk and calcium very stable. (Either by dosing pumps, or calcium reactor).

A little seeding of coraline algae from a other tank never hurts also. I think the most important thing other than water quality is maintaining your alk and calcium at very steady levels.

I crushed an small encrusted rock and tossed it in a new tank...I'm cheap and simple. It worked, am I going to reef jail?

Only if you cheat and use purple up :p

This is only for before your tank has animals. Constant light will harm them.

Since the topic is coraline I had a question for you guys. Is branching coraline rare/difficult to grow? I have some on only one of my rocks and its awesome!!!

I would send a Paypal for folks that could ship that....I found a site...http://www.live-plants.com/. Always wanted to try, but I'm chicken poop and don't know what to expect.

That's really cool looking!

My guess is the encrusting grows quicker. I haven't seen any local branching Coraline so I have no experience with it. I can say different species of grass grow faster than others. I have a doughnut of lime green stuff shooting up over my "stock" grass. Most plants are like that, so I'll go with that theory haha.
