Hi guys

Any tips on "thinning out" my quantity of red mushrooms?

Started with 4, got about 70 now. Given a few away but it's at point where I need to thin them out a bit

I guess my secret is I stopped testing about 6 months ago and let it do its thing without the constant monitoring and trying to reach certain parameters

I now just do 30% water change every 2 weeks, and once a week put a capful of seachem reef plus in
Mix my own salt with red sea, don't test that either, just rely on the calculation on the box haha

It's obviously reached a sweet spot as everything growing and looking healthy

Haha yes Perth, Western Australia, so miles from anything and anyone haha
thanks for kind comments

Hey man, I see ur in Perth, so am I!! Some of our LFS would take them for credit I think

Thanks Yanni

I'll give em a call and see if they'll trade in for credit. Any tips for getting the established ones off easily? I only want to thin them out a bit not get rid of them

You can just scalpel as close to the rock as possible usually, taking as much foot off the rock as you can. But be warned, tiny amounts of foot left on the rock, will regrow into mushrooms again haha

Have you tried shipping a few of them to cookeville , Tennessee? I hear if done to the correct address , they will not only pay shipping , but will return the hospitality.. he doesn’t need that many couches anyway , he just loves chilling on shrooms

Upon further investigation , seeing as you’re in Australia I ha….. we’re sorry . The number you have dialed has been changed , disconnected , or is no longer in service ..

I have a few hundred to get rid of… the ones on the glass should be easy. The rest, calc paste is what I am going t try.

I have used coral glue over a tiny piece of foot left on the tock

From what I've read, mushrooms will get annoyed and let go of the rock if you point a temporary pump straight at them to give them more flow than they like. If you can grab 'em before they reattach, bam- intact mushrooms, no cutting required.

Or cut 'em off and give 'em a few days to heal up before shipping.

It makes them very unhappy for sure and cooked about half the stem. The main body unraveled for a few days then pulled back together. If you do this, you may need to hit it a couple times.
I ended up replacing my rockwork Lol. Here is the old stuff waiting for me to deal with. Mushies 'far as the eye can see. Very hardy and quick growing.

Jesus!!!! That is a lot of shrooms haha
I may just try the power head method 1st and see how that goes

Weird that the red ones have gone from about 4 to about 60, and the green ones only gone from 5 to 6 in the same timeframe

They also multiply differently, the green ones split into 2, where as my red ones seem to move on the rock, and leave a base behind, which then creates a new one in its place
