How to Seed Your Algae Turf Scrubber Screen.

The hit on the idea of seeding the screen of a waterfall algae turf scrubber to give the screen a good kickstart and speed the process up getting it growing green hair algae and even Ulva intestinalis a lot quicker than just waiting it to appear. People using the method I will describe below report the growth of algae within days rather than weeks s it certainly works and works well.

The whole process is very simple, however, first of all, ensure your screen is well roughed up and if necessary rough it up some more using a hole cutting saw or coarse hacksaw blade.

You only require a few grammes of algae about 20g should do fine. Take half of the algae and squeeze I into a tightish ball. Rub this quite hard over the screen first left to right then up and down and finally diagonally. The screen should be tinged green with all the rubbing and tiny/microscopic amounts of the algae will be attached.

Next, take the remainder of the algae and again squeeze it into a ball, take a toothpick and push it through the ball and through the holes in the screen. This will hopefully push some of the algae further into the screen do this every few inches up around the screen. You won’t see much attach but microscopic amounts will be pushed deeper into the screen.

If your ATS is lit from both sides then repeat the process on both sides of the screen, don’t be concerned that little of the algae will attach, the aim isn’t to get large parts of the algae to attach this is not necessary to seed the screen. The greening of the screen is what matters most to seed the screen.

Once the water is flowing down the screen much of any algae seen on the screen will be washed off, again this is not a concern as enough should remain to germinate from the remaining microscopic amounts left. It may be best if possible to start with a slow as possible flow over the screen while ensuring the whole screen receives a flow of water. Once algae is attached you can turn the flow up a little. In a few days, you should see the beginnings of green algae starting to grow from your seeding. That is all there really is too it.

When it comes to harvesting time, with Ulva intestinalis I suggest you trim it back with scissors do not pull it off esp during the early stages as it needs to get a firm grip.With a little luck, you should be able to trim Ulva at around 7 to 10 days following seeding usually. Ulva grows a lot faster than GHA and needs trimming back regular and in doing so you are giving the Ulva a better regrowth start than if you simply pulled it away from the screen.

Thanks, After I wrote that quite a few members on a UK forum used it with good results and all reported a speedy colonisation of either GHA or Ulva of their virgin ATS screen.
 
I set up my scrubber yesterday. I have a wee bit of GHA in my sump I'm going to seed the screen today. Thanks for the idea.
 
*UPDATE*
When Seeding with Ulva,
I have recently tried a little mod to the screen which has proven very successful in getting the Ulva to attach better to the screen. Here is what I did. Think of the holes in the screen as being made up of lots of + joining the holes together. Now with a pair of sharp pointed nail scissors cut out the + to turn 4 holes into one larger one. Do this near the top of the screen about 20mm down from the slot pipe, do this approximately every 20 to 25mm horizontally along the screen. Now you will have a series of still small holes but of course larger than the others. You can more easily thread the Ulva through these new holes and will stay put as the water flows over them.

I may do another row or 2 lower down the screen but that may not be necessary as the Ulva will most likely seed itself lower down the screen but we shall see how well that goes.

I know this is old but when I made new screens for my ATS I decided to seed the screen with ulva lactuca after only two weeks it needed a cleaning had lots of ulva lactuca and some hair algae growing. I should have taken pictures but I only removed by hand no scraping about 3-4 cups of bright but dark green algae. I was surprised that the latuca grew that well when there was only a green shine and a few little pices stuck to the screen

Lacuta is a broad leafy ulva like small lettuce while intrstinalis is more stringy and therefore IMO a better algae to grow on the screen. However, as long as you are growing a fast growing green algae then that's good. I have heard of people trying lacuta but with not the same success that you have achieved.

Well all I have been able to find in the US for sale is latuca. The hair algae will probably out grow it eventually.

The ulva species, what ever it is, that populated my original scrubber screen seeded naturally over time, & seems to be what naturally populates most scrubber screen I see.
Its in the tank already, you just don't see it.

Intestinalis is reported to grow along the coast of NE USA. I know of people growing intestinalis for around a year and still growing strong keeping most of the GHA at bay. IME as long as you have NO3 at at least 1ppm or higher intrstinalis will continue to flourish and growvat a rapid rate. My NO3 dropped to below 0.5ppm and the Ulva slowed in growth.

My ulva storms ahead even when no3 & po4 read zero ?

Depends on what test kits you are using and of course neither are ever at zero. I just found that my ulva and GHA growth slowed when my nutrients got to very low levels.

Yes always traces in the water. Redsea for no3 & salifert for po4. Don't usually run no3 that low

Can't comment on the Red Sea kit but I along with many have found the Salifert PO4 test kit a complete waste of time and money, very inaccurate unless they have vastly improved it. They akways tend to show 0 PH4 unless very high.

BRS tested the redsea no3, the most accurate they said
