Ok, I have a 20 gallon reef. At one point I had 2 bangaii cardinals, 1 oc. Clown and 1 yellowtail or similar damsel fish. (Not exactly sure which one.) Now at the moment I only have the clown and the yellow tail left. The bangaii ' s have died. The first was definitely picked on when lights went out and died the next day. I wasn't sure who did it but all I know is the yellowtail took all the rocks and caves as his. Seems very nasty about it too. The clown don't seem bothered by anything. He swam with the bangaii ' s all the time. Never chased them. But the yellowtail always chases them from the rocks. Now I never saw the 2nd bangaii attached or any injuries, last night he ate like a pig and I did a 10 % water change (which I do every Saturday) and turn the lights on to find him dead and hermits crawling all over him. I am so ticked cause I love my bangaii ' s. Am I going to have to remove the yellowtail or what should I do.... any ideas if I can add another fish that will be ok in there and what kind? Or should I just try to get the booger out of there. I have another 30 gallon tank that I have a nice yellow tail in don't seem to bother anyone in that tank. Thanks!!!

If it is the demon fish, you will have to get him out of there. Remember clowns are also part of the damsel family, so the yellow tail might not pick on him or he could hold his own.

damsels can be the bully of the tank for sure. maybe try moving a rock or two not in the sand but higher up or a coral or two to not make the fish feel so much at home. if that does not work then I would remove him

Once Damsel, and their cousin clowns mature they stake out their territories, quite simply a 20 gallon is not enough room for those territories, and there is no room to flee. I had a 30 and once my clowns matured I had to remove all other fish including the yellow tail damsel, because the clowns would kill absolutely anything that entered the tank including large cleaner shrimp. It's the nature of the beast, not the fishes fault. Remove the Damsel and be prepared for the clowns in the future to become equally as aggressive and go after any new or even older additions.

Long story short (too late)bigger tank or less fish.

A bit too small of a tank to keep damsels especially the yellowtail in my opinion. But i think you should keep the yellowtail. The bengai you have is most sensitive of the inhabittants and died anyway. Get other fish to replace.

I kept the yellowtail but took him out of the tank. I had a mess trying to get him out. About an hour. I had my rocks right where I wanted them and now I'm a little disappointed. Lol but still looks ok I guess. Hard to put things back where they came!!! Lol but now my only guy in the 20 L reef is a ocellaris clown. Thinking what I should add with him?!? I was thinking royal gramma? Another clown? Lawnmower blenny? Pair of blue green chromis?? What a rough night. I think I killing two mushroom corals trying to catch that damsel. And btw I don't think the damsel was a yellowtail. I bought him with that label. But I think it is a similar damsel. Give me ideas if you read this on what to add with my clown! Thanks!!!

I cannot figure out how damsels always end up being the first addition to a tank. LFS' are incredibly irresponsible about that, as damsels are widely known as MAJOR bullies.

Ok. Great! I will look into it. Thanks fella's. Tank just looks so empty with just a clown. I see so many tanks with a pair of clowns. But I have a really nice clown now that has been in 2 of my tanks and not picked on anything. The damsels a pj cardinal the banggai :-( or anything. Hate to get something that will pick on him or he would kill.
