How to take good photos

hey guys I'm kinda new to photo taking part of the hobby Have had a tank for a while but never really took photos of anything Recently me and the wife picked up a few really nice spices and wanted to take pics of them but nothing seems to be coming out good. Any hints and help is mic appreciated
