hello guys.
I am a new reefbulider from China..In my country, using live rocks is very popular way when we set up a new reef tank's nitrification system.
but i don't like this way. many low quality live rocks bring many harmful organisms...
i have read some wonderful reef tank's articles ,and i find many people use unlive rock ...
so , the question is how to use unlive rock to bulid nitrification system. add nitriting bacteria of various brands? or add some shrimp meat to seawater and wait for the algae and bacteria to grow??
thank for any reply...

One of my tanks I used dead rock (plus a few small pieces of live rock from another tank) and added 40 pounds of live sand to get the process going. It's going great for me.

A lot depends on the size of the tank, the sand, how clean the rock is, and some of it is luck. The sand I bought says on the bag that you can add fish instantly, but that's not a great idea in my opinion. I'd wait at least 2 weeks, checking the levels every few days to see how it's progressing.
