How to/ what is?? The best sump system

I inherited a 56 gallon Uniquarium tank with a built in Sump system from a good friend. dimensions:

Full tank size:
Sump area: 4” D 24” H 36” W
Swimmable area: 10.25” D 24” H 36” W

The pump sits above a sponge and some ammonia reducing media. The water then passes through a protein skimmer and over trays of bio balls.

This is the first saltwater sump system I’ve had so I’m looking for any advice on cleaning/maintenance or how to make it the best sump!

Sounds like you might have an all in one system?

I would make sure the back area is clean, remove all media/bioballs and replace sponges if desired to keep in system.

Please include photo of tank for more advice.

Yeah it’s built into the back of the tank, I’ll get some photos soon.

Question: when you say clean; I’ve heard different people say some detritus is okay and others say to vac it out. Obviously I want there to be beneficial bacteria that’s helping keep the cycle healthy. There’s plenty of bacteria in the bio balls though, I’m thinking it’s probably good to vac out the detritus?

Any suggestions on alternatives to bio balls?

Live rock. Take the balls out and load it up with liverock or depending on how the water trickles through.

Also,

Some people think a mulm layer of detritus in the sump is beneficial, but these are all questionable.
I enjoyed making one of the AIO chambers in my old tank into a refugium.

It worked fantastic and added a nice layer of filteration.
