How will a yellow tang grow?

I would like to add a young yellow tang from biota to my tank to help with algae control. The tank is a red sea E170. The display is 37g, 25"x20". I'm planning on getting a larger tank towards the end of the year. But if it'll out grow my tank in 6 months I'll just hold off on the new tank. Biota says they come in 1.25"+. That's pretty dang small. How fast do these guys grow?

If it was me, I would wait till the new tank is set up and ready to go. The yellows do grow pretty fast, but if you was to wait the price might just come down a little bit for them.

That’s fine in 37g for quite some time.
This YT was 1” five years ago, now is best 4”.

I have a reefer 170. If your 100% sure you'll be upgrading a small biota yellow would be perfectly fine for 6 months. That said I'm not a fan of buying fish based on a future tank that may or may not happen but that's me. Often life has a way of causing plans to change.

I recently bought a 1" Bioto yellow tang. 3 months later and it is 3.25" in size or so. This is my second Biota yellow tang and it has grown faster than the first. Unfortunately my first one died when I dosed lanthanum chloride and didn't do into a 10 micron filter sock which is what I do now.

I also do not like to purchase on a "what might happen " basis.
I say wait.
I've had mine for about 10 years.
It grew fast in the beginning. Not so much anymore but, my opinion, 37 is a bit small.

I wouldn't put a yellow tang in a tank that size, even if it's a baby. Not kind to the fish. I got mine at 1.5 inches or so, probably 2.5-3" now less than a year later and constantly uses all of the swimming real estate available in my reefer 350.

A good rule of thumb is bigger fish often grown very quickly to about half their max size (a year or so if eating well) and then slowly grow towards their max size, and often "max size" is more of a suggestion

It’ll most likely be fine, but it’s always best not to stress a fish any more than necessary. I’d wait on the Tang and put the money in your new tank fund.

They grow most quickly during the first 2 years then this levels off. I would tend to wait until your other tank is up and ready.

They grow fast. Mine is 4 months old from biota and probably 3.5 or so inches now

Agreed with the majority of the sentiment above, our tang tend to grow pretty quickly in an aquarium environment. I wouldn't keep them in that size aqauarium for more than 2-3 months.
