I am thinking about adding a clam to my system in a few months and have been doing research.
I have a 60 gallon cube aquarium with a firefish, pair of snowflake clowns, Flasher wrasse, and a Forktail blenny. For inverts several hermit crabs, emerald crab, several snails and a cleaner shrimp.
My Tank states. Ammonia/nitrite=0 Nitrate~5, Phosphate= .0398, Calcium=460, DKH=13, Salinity=1.026, pH=8.0.

I have a mixed reef with Zoas, polythoas, torch, Frogspawns, Acan, Blastos, Duncan, Lobo.

Here is what i have researched and learned on clams so far.
Different types need to be placed on either sand or on rock.
Both filter feeders as well as photosynthetic
Need room to open.
Medium to low flow.
Have not seen much on being picky about what quality besides needing calcium and alkalinity.
smaller(younger) clams need more feeding then larger ones. Due to the ratio of Surface area to Volume.
Derasa Clams seem to be the most hardy but will it get to big for my tank in 2-4 years?
I dont know much about Maxima or Crocea clams

Normally they grow slow and to the size equal to the tank rate you should be fine

I am planning an update in my mind right now, (2 years down the road when i am out of college) so i cant make any plans in my current tank as i cant guarantee my priorities at that time. So a Clam will last for a long time in my tank? 24x24 inches. what kinda growth rate is expected for a 2-4 inch clam? i would love one as a show piece but i could not dedicate a ton of my aquarium to any one piece yet.

I would say it will probably Max out at 6 to 8 in and it will take quite a while. Just be sure to supply filter food .

I just got a derasa 2 weeks ago. It's doing great, have it sitting in about 110 par. It's 2 inches so I do add reef snow once a day.

Try not to set them on the sand. A small piece of rock is fine. On the sand is how "parasite". Get in them and kill them. Also they like to have a secure place to attach their foot. Makes for a happier clam.

Good to know! I read the deresa clams like the sand bed but I guess I took that literally.
