A mess...a bona fide mess. That is the state of current project. Despite my wife's misgivings, and the fact that I've been called a liar (because I am after swearing I would never do salt again), I'm slowly diving back into the only thing that keeps me interested.
The tank is a mess after doing freshwater for the last 5 years. I've got to reseal the whole thing. Come to think of it, the sump needs to be resealed also. I now look longingly at my acrylic refugium because it doesn't require such love. Oh well. Time to learn new things.
The 180 gallon display has been completely drained. Now I just need to clean it out and reseal the darn thing. My freshies have been moved to a 40 gallon tank. Pretty sure I'm going to give most of what is left to my local dentist, but heck, I still love the peacock gudgeons I have in there. But, I've used that as a top off tank a decade ago and it works wonderfully for that.
The table on my back deck is covered in coral rock. I've now destroyed two large drill bits in my quest to carve out larger holes as well as an attempt to manipulate shrimp and their gobies to occupy underneath certain rocks in order to hopefully see them more often out front. I'm sure that will work about as well as trying to train a cat.
This will be a super slow process for many reasons but probably my rate limiting factor will be my love of good, and often times expensive, equipment. That being said I'm trying to find cheaper alternatives for certain things while I slowly save up to buy what I really want. I have a lot of equipment in use and in storage, so an accounting will need to be done also.
The closest LFS that has anything salt related is an hour and a half away. But, he has some decent offerings. Pretty sure he got a little excited knowing I was making the change back to salt after what I've spent in there previously on freshies. I hope to help keep him successful. Otherwise, I buy a lot online and spend a lot of time here finding new and interesting places to make purchases.
And if the title didn't give it away, I'm a hillbilly. A hillbilly who likes smaller fish. So, I'm going to have fun stocking a 350 g total system with small(ish) fish. My motto during this build will be "big tank, small fish". I absolutely love gobies. I plan on keeping quite a few goby/shrimp pairs as well has quite a few of my favorites, green banded gobies. I have a couch right in front of my wall tank and I spend hours there watching everything up close. I also like basslets and dartfish. Haven't decided if I'll have tangs again or not. I do like watching them peck at the algae. Might go with a tomini this time. I've never kept one of those.
Anyway, this will be slow going. Wish me luck.
