Hi, All! I'm setting up a new build, i used to have several reef tanks but got out of it when I went back to college (to study water quality engineering ironically). 25 years later I've got little kids and they wanted a goldfish, so I thought, "Phh! Goldfish?! I'll show you fish..." $3000 later, with my wife rolling her eyes, I'm building a 90 gal DT, with sump in the basement.

Apparently my work associates think I'm some sort of expert in water systems engineering, aquatic chemistry, and ecological restoration - fooled em well I guess ;) . So anyway I thought, "I know all this stuff about water stuff (I mostly restore streams, wetlands, lakes, rivers, etc.), getting back into aquariums should be easy, I used to do that (before a bad back, knees, 3 kids and generalized lethargy).

Holy cow, alot has changed in 25 years! LEDs... the internet... pre-built sumps... aquarium controllers... what little you can buy for $20! Did you know you can just buy protein skimmers now?! We used to make em (they sucked, but still...) I was planning to get rich inventing an aquarium controller, guess I slept on that one too long cuz they've apparently been available for quite a while :)

Anyway glad to see there's a great forum full of knowledge here, and happy to be a part of the community!

I seriously doubt your degree in water engineering is any reason why your friends think you're an expert on the subject :p

I've got a good feeling about the future build thread you'll be starting, be sure to follow up with a link here so I can watch it.

Welcome to R2R! Yeah it’s crazy how much the hobby has changed. Information is so much more accessible than it used to be and there’s a retail product for everything. DIY used to be a necessity, but no more. Welcome to next generation reefing!
