I've been enjoying the posts from R2R on facebook for a while now, and decided to join up today. I had kept marine aquariums off and on since 1986, and tried my hand at a reef, but did not enjoy a lot of success. It seemed that fish-only tanks were easier to maintain back then. I even had a 10 gallon tank made into a partitioned wet-dry system back in 1990, and it still works well today! I have a couple of tank raised Percula Clownfish, an Electric Blue Damsel, and a couple of Hermit Crabs in it, and they have all been happy for about 1-1/2 years now.

I'm thinking of getting one of these "nano-reefs" that are 5-10 gallons, and are self contained with proper lighting and filtration. I've even seen reef systems of this size that have a small protein skimmer built in! Anyway, I would appreciate any advice on good brands and models to consider. I'm not that "up to speed" on this miniature scale reef system, but I would like to get one and try my hand at it. Thanks again! John J in SC

John, you started around the same time as I did, it might be saying something about our age lol... I was a freshman in high school when I convinced my Mom to buy me my first "wet/dry" filter in 1985, it changed my life lol. Prior to that, it was under gravel filters and marine fish only, mixed in with African cichlid set ups. Welcome to Reef2Reef, the best source of reefers and knowledge on the innerwebz.

There are many options for nano-systems, but I would advise you to hop over the nano forums here and peruse through journals. You will get more ideas there than we could probably recommend. As you know, this hobby has several price breaks when it comes to equipment, only you know your budget, so take a look there and see what you come up with! One of the more popular nano's is the IM systems, they are AIO's and pretty affordable.

Glad to have you here on R2R!!
