Hello all!
My name is Bill and I am stoked to join this forum!
A little about me:
My feeding experience began in the early 2000’s when I was in HS. I bought a 24 gallon aqua pod off craigslist and a pair of clowns. Like many, I didn’t know much, so that tank didn’t flourish as well as it could have. I kept a few LPS and mostly softies for a few years. I graduated HS in ‘08, and left home for college. Unfortunately I couldn’t take the tank with me, so my dad took over the tank and maintained it.
In 2009, he added a Condy which ended up dying and nuking the tank. Lost all corals and the male clown fish. We quickly got the female- who we called Missy- out of the tank and set up an emergency 10 gallon while we cleared out the aquapod.
After resetting everything up, that tank ran till 2013 until my dad set up a 55 gallon tank. We bought low level LEDs and filled the tank with softies and got Missy a new mate.
During this time I was in grad school in Des Moines, and my dad was still taking care of the tank. He stocked it with a yellow tang, a few peppermint shrimp, a goby and pistol shrimp pair as well as a small CUC. This tank did well for the next two years, but in 2015, all of the coral started dying off. The tank became overrun with bristleworms from my dad feeding too much, and the tang ended up dying.
I moved back to CO in 2015 and bought a house in a town 45 south of my parents.
Fast forward to January of this year (2018) and my dad got a new job in Syria, leaving me to manage the tank from the next town over. I get a call at 4am from my mom and sister freaking out that the tank was leaking. Screaming over to their house, we discover that the sump was leaking and the bulkheads for the drain had become loose.
By this point in time, my mom was tired of the maintenance (feeding and making RO/DI) so I decided I was going to set up a tank in my home and transfer all the livestock.
I set up a 40B and drilled it for a sump myself, and made my own stand.
After many months of cycling and stabilizing we have both Missy and Mister, and a flourishing reef.
I am excited to continue in this hobby and focus mainly on keeping Missy and Mister healthy, but focusing primarily on corals.
