90 gallon with stand, sump, skimmer, koralia pumps, aquatic life 4 blurb fixture and live rock, needs new skimmer pump, return pump and bulbs. He s asking $250. I'm new to reef stuff how good of a deal is this given I need to make a few repairs.

Seems like a good deal but I would make sure the silicone is in good condition and the tank doesn't leak. You may need to reseal the tank depending on what shape it is in.

Arbitrarily, it's not a bad deal... but you're going to be investing a good deal of time and effort to clean that mess up.

This is a hobby... I always recommend, when it comes to something you do for enjoyment, that you get what you want, rather than what is cheap. If a rebuilt 90 is what you want, great! If you're really wanting something else, you're far better off saving for what you really want than buying something you don't want because it's cheap. Yeah, buying what you really want might be expensive... but it's less so than buying twice.

You're looking at what, about a grand worth of equipment there, brand new? Looks to me as if you need to build (or buy) a new stand, re-plumb, many hours of cleaning... maybe reseal the tank. How much is your time worth? When you get all the work done, are you going to be happy with the result?

Questions only you can answer.

Well put, Sir..

Thanks for the input guys. I'm really torn between a full established set up, something like his or piecing my own system together.

A used 90 gallon w/ stand around where I live is already 400.00. If you were doing 250 for tank and stand only, it would already be a good deal. If your on a budget, this is a good tank to get started with.

Offer them $150.00, it doesn’t look like they took care of anything. Buy what you want, not someone’s problem

Hmm, Well a new 90 would cost a lot more than 250 $ ,throw in a stand? At 1st I thought the stand could be repainted but the 2nd pic shows the rot around the hinge. The lights aren't the best.
what kind of overflows? what is the return pump?
Is this Your 1st tank?
I think Grey Beard is about right. There is a "lot" of work there !

I'd ask why the tank is half drained. On the local and club boards in my area there are tanks being given away or really cheap. I'd find something in a little better condition with some higher end equipment. Just my 2c.

Looking at how that has been maintained. Salt creep, rust, rot etc I think I would pass

Isn't a reef ready 90 with stand in the $500-$600 new? Obviously there would be more cost in equipment but no worries of a flood :)

I let him know I'm all set with it, he can sell to someone else. As people stated it's too much work and has to many unknowns. Thanks for the advice. I like this place already. [emoji1303]

It's a decent deal, but I like offering $150 as well. The issue with buying a full setup in this type of condition is that you'll spend a ton of time cleaning it up and repairing, so everything will be cool for a month or so. Then you'll decide that you really want a new skimmer and replace that. Then, you'll want to ditch the Koralias shortly after and get Vortechs, so on and so forth.

Personally, I'll typically buy used tank/stand combos, but very rarely will purchase an entire setup unless it's exactly what I'm looking for and in great shape or is an absolute steal. The best (or worst) part about the commerce side of this hobby is that there's a ton of turnover. Tons of folks spark an interest and go all-in over the course of a month or two, then get frustrated and quit the hobby shortly after and sell everything. You can find the latest and greatest of anything reef-related in the classified section of reef forums or Craigslist with 3 months of light use for 25+% off retail at pretty much any given time. Because of this, I buy a ton of lightly used equipment, but I like to figure out exactly what I want, then piece the system together that way instead of grabbing a package deal (in most cases anyway).
