It is often advised to pass the effluent of a denitrator over GAC to eliminate the risk for HS to enter the aquarium. But Hydrogen sulphide is a polar compound and GAC prefers to absorb non polar compounds. How reliable is this advice?

"Pass the water over activated carbon, which may bind some sulfide, and may also catalyze the oxidation." from the linked article.
It says: "may" and "some". As H2S is polar how GAC will absorb it? I know non-polar compounds are bounded with GAC by Van der Waals forces. How GAC absorbs H2S?

Bacteria and other microorganisms also interact actively or passively with the surface of GAC in contact with water. So, probably H2S may be removed by these bio-chemical processes but in that case the GAC is used as a bio and not as an absorber. For these processes we do not need GAC especially. And how reliable is this?
