I bought this sad favia for like $7 a couple months ago thinking it might start growing back. Well, its definitely growing, but in a weird way. This one polyp is on the left side, while the other (normal) polyps are on the right side. The first picture is from last month. The second is from last night. The third is the other half and what it would normally look like.
Does it look like it's growing new polyps but in a honey comb type of way? I'm real confused as I've never seen any of my corals grow in this way before. I was told that it's very unusual. What do yall think?

has nobody ever seen this before? This honeycomb type of growth? Is it not weird enough for ya? Yall are difficult to please today.

Really? I've never seen that before. But ok Thanks!

I've seen it all the time from them receding and growing back. I have a dragon soul favia doing that now.

Ahh. See this guy was in terrible shape. I've had it for a good 6 months + and this one polyp just kept getting bigger. So they do this when they are re-growing over the dead parts? A normal healthy piece that was fragged wouldn't grow this way right? Try'n to get it straight in my head. Thanks

I do not know about all in favia family. But gonistrea will. Has happen to a few i have had, where large areas have died. That polyp will start to send out the coralite edges around the new mouths. Generally they will just pop out new eyes on side. The new skeleton will be on top of the dead one. Now if it was fragged it may not have done it that way.

wow! That's pretty cool. learn something new every day! Thanks for the lesson :)

Agree; that one polyp is about to turn into seven.
