To set the story: I test generally every two weeks unless something seems off, I do a 10g water change weekly. I make my own RODI for the ATO but typically buy saltwater from a specific LFS simply for convenience sake.

Tested Jan 1 per my usual schedule, everything stable and normal (I keep a running excel document to track).

No losses in tank, I purchase some Kent's garlic drops online for a fish who's being iffy about eating to see if I can encourage him. I use 1 drop on the frozen food for this week. He eats. Excellent. No other changes to feeding frequency, amount, variety, etc.

Was headed to a different side of town than usual, so decided to get my water from a different LFS who claims to use the same brand, no issue right? Get water on the 6th, go home and do my usual changes. Another feeding with a single drop of garlic happens.

8th my tank has a funk growing on the sand bed and the corals seem a little *****, can't tell at this point if the funk is the beginning cyano or dino because it's kinda brownish in light, kinda reddish with lights out. Seems weird, check that all the powerheads are still flowing and look good. Check the sump to ensure all is well there.

9th do an early water change to be on the safe side and manually remove what I can -- I've picked up water from my normal LFS. New resin for the RODI is already on order, but better check that as well.... Check the tds on my rodi to make sure it isn't blown earlier than usual - it's at 6, we're starting to elevate but that shouldn't be enough to cause this problem. Perform tests after letting everything settle. Everything is exactly where it tested on the 1st, except nitrates. Let me test that again, and again.... nitrates spiked from the stable 2 I keep it at (my corals always seem happier around there than at 0) to 15?! No fish have died, no corals have died, I see no loss in inverts or snails.... No changes to feeding aside from 2 drops of garlic total from the 1st to the 9th....

My question: What are the chances this is from the garlic drops? Or is it more likely I got some terrible water from the other LFS? Any other ideas on how this could have happened? Doing another waterchange tomorrow to help drop the levels....

2 drops total of pure ammonia won't raise nitrates by 13 ppm. I'd look for water or other as cause.

I should add...I add 2 drops daily that I soak in my dry food with no significant impact to nitrates.

I obviously don't want to go back to the other LFS so there's no way for me to test their water. I did test my RODI for nitrates and it was fine. I haven't used the garlic again for fear it was that - I even checked the expiration date in case I got an old bottle, it's fine. I didn't mention it in the original post, but I ran a phos test and that is not elevated. This is in 100g of water. Had to be pretty significant to bump it that high that fast I'd think...

Probably good practice to check LFS water before putting in tank. Most check salinity only. You can get some cheap test strips just for a quick go/no go check. Not terribly accurate but will be ok for positive values. You could even check it before you leave store...why pay for something that's bad for your tank.

Never know intill you test it in freash mix water. You could dr Tim's waste away and move on. Hard to say could be a many things.

I don’t know if it would be the cause here, but only 0.15 ppm nitrite can falsely show as 15 ppm nitrate. Maybe the new water had nitrite and you tank had not yet processed it. If that’s the case, the apparent nitrate will drop again.

FWIW, nitrate at 15 ppm is not a big deal. Some folks target a level near that.
The tank definitely reacted to it though so I'd rather not keep it that high, everyone seems happiest when I keep in the 2-5 range. Maybe if it was a gradual increase it would have gone more smoothly.

Maybe, I did a 10% change today and I'll test later this evening to see if there's any change. I did test a few days after the initial change, when the tank started to show the reaction - it wasn't same day.

Well, good news is after dosing with Biofuel 3 days, and changing another 10% I've dropped from 15 to nearly 10 so it's making progress.

All is back within normal range, most of the corals have completely bounced back. I'm still fighting the new cyano outbreak that came with this issue but we're getting there.
