Hey guys,

I feel like im coming down with some sort of illness and have a broad question. Can illnesses/viruses spread from human into the reef tank? Should I avoid any sort of handling/maintenance until it passes? Any recommendations??

I know its a broad question so better safe than sorry. If anything negative could potentially be passed, I will hold off on my general maintenance until its gone. Not risking ANYTHING!

Bacteria and viruses infecting people will inevitably get in the tank. But human infections have evolved to exploit human tissues. I doubt that the can exploit the resources in your reef tank. Also, your reef tank will have a host of established bacteria that will out compete the disease organisms.

If the disease organisms could infest natural environments we would contract colds, flu, measles, chicken pox and other diseases from our yards, fields and woods. Instead, we generally catch the diseases by a specific form of contact with an infected individual. You don't catch HIV from your flower garden.

Ya, that's not how illnesses/viruses work. You're safe.

Just remember you are the one who is compromised. Don't do maintenance while on cold medicines, either, for your safety.
