It's almost 2019!!!

I'm always looking was to save when spending money on my Reef. Ether it's with equipment or power consumption down to my everyday needs.

I bought a pack of human sushi Nori from Rawnori.com: Here it is https://rawnori.com/collections/raw...ducts/raw-organic-nori-seaweed-sheets-50-pack

It's cheap and it has large sheets. My fish love it!

BUT I do have a concern. When I add it to the water it leaches a red dye, I think its the nori itself but maybe not? It comes apart VERY easy unlike the ones you buy at your LFS. So sometimes I will have a ton of small pieces floating around the tank.

I been having some high nitrates in the 15-20ppm and im wondering if this is the cause. Can we use human Nori?

Absolutely! Use that nori. Just make sure there are no additives listed on the package, like the one you posted. Good job. What you are seeing are the natural juices (iodine) leaching out of the nori. Those higher nitrate readings are probably from the fish's increased poop. Not a big worry. Just more water changes as needed or more chaeto in the sump. Have you tried Sea Lettuce? Really soaks up the nitrates. Happy New Year! :)

Thanks Big G!

I had grape calerpa that disintegrated. I now have a big ball of Cheto and Dragons Breath? Its red. I have my light on at night for about 10hrs a day. Should I adjust?

What will it tell me when it needs more light? I just have a led light on it from eBay. It has a few different spectrums.

Watch (test) that the nitrates don't drop to zero; watch the growth of the chaeto to see if it is slowing; and watch the color of the chaeto for changes, that may indicate a need for more light or a longer photo period.

States its Porphyra Yezoensis which is the same species as Julian Sprungs green.

One time I tried dried kelp. None of the fish would touch it. But I've been feeding "human" nori for at least a decade with no issues.
