This is my first tank I have had it up and running for about 6 months. I have never been through a hurricane with the tank soooo I'm pretty sure the power will go off during the storm. Help please list any items I will need for the tank I do not want anything to die and I am scared for the tank! Thanks!

I have the exact same fear!!! I even purchased a gas generator to run the minimal stuff on the tank. But as of right now we might have a mandatory evacuation and I can't run the generator if I'm not here!! Plus, our insurance doesn't cover the loss and I have over $1000 in corals and fish. I wish I had some good advice. The only thing I can say is you can get a smaller power backup supply at like a Staples (but they only run about 6-8hrs) and your LFS may have a battery run air pump. We have been thru other hurricanes but been lucky to only have lost power a couple of days. I hope someone out there has some better suggestions. I wish you much luck & blessings with your tank, hope you make it thru safely!

Thank you and be safe

I dont know whether you solved your problem or not but here is a good way to solve your problem. It is what I have done with my tank. Go to Walmart....yes Walmart. Get a boat bilge pump in the boat/ fishing area. They run 20 to 60 dollars. From there go to the car vattery section and buy a marine deep cell 12 volt battery. It is the same way rain water is pumped out of a boat. The pump replaces your return oump and it wull run off off the deep cell battery for days. The pump may or may not come with the flex hose but you need that also unless your return is set up with 3/4 at which point you can modify your set up. I wouldnt. Good luck.

If you have a vortech pump it's pretty easy. I used a dry cell car battery and wired it up to my mp40 controller. You can get the parts at a radio shack type place. It ran for almost 5 days when I lost power during hurricane Irene a few years back. I didn't lose anything and you don't have to be there to switch it over. It will automatically switch to battery power when the power goes out. Lack of flow and no oxgen exchange is what will do you in. My mp40 has been the best investment I've made for my tank, saved it twice.

Just want to say I feel for you all with that shocking hurricane (I live in Australia and have had only one power cut in the last several years). Stay safe and I hope your tanks survive..good luck!
