I just got back into salt and live on the East Coast of Florida. After witnessing the devastation Michael brought to the panhandle I have begun to think about planning for a possible power outage should I hurricane hit our area. At the moment, a generator is out of my budget so I am looking for other options to keep my tank alive during an emergency.

As an east coast resident and reefer too since hurricane season is hopefully coming to an end I would save for a generator so you can be prepared for next year. Generators will run more than your tank like your refrigerator and even a portable ac unit. If none of the other things in the home matter then portable air stones and battery backups are another option. I'm not a salesperson for generators but honestly I think every person that lives down here should have one should mother nature rear her ugly head.

I bought a cheap power Inverter from Walmart that plugs or clips on a car battery. Run extension cord to necessary items. Have 2 deep cycle batteries on the boat for additional backup. Not saying buy a boat but it helps ;)

A generator is your best option. I live in south eastern NC and went thru a long stretch with no power recently. We have weathered several storms, but always had power of some sort. I invested in a 22kw whole home generator earlier this year. Was worth it for me. You need to factor in, if a large storm comes in, will you have to leave your home for up to a week? Do you live in a flood plain?
If so, it may be hard to keep a tank alive, unless you are physically there. Naturally your family is more important than a tank. Air stone and battery back up is fine for short term. But when it extends into days, you need a generator.
